After Sinus Grafts

  • Avoid blowing your nose for 2 weeks after surgery. Wipe your nose gently with a soft tissue if needed.
  • If you need to sneeze, try to do so with your mouth open to avoid pressure in the sinus. Do not pinch off your nostrils.
  • A nosebleed is common post surgically. If it is persistent, contact the office.
  • Take all medications as directed. Do not take the prescribed medications on an empty stomach, to help reduce nausea. If Sudafed is recommended, take one tablet every 12 hours for 10 days.
  • Do not rinse, spit, or drink through a straw for at least 24 hours, this may cause bleeding.
  • Do not smoke or use smokeless tobacco for at least 48 hours.
  • Do not lift or pull on lip to look at the surgical site. This may pull out the sutures.
  • You may notice a small amount of white granules in your mouth if a graft was placed. This is not unusual.
  • To help minimize swelling, place ice packs on the outside of your face on the side of surgery. Remove the ice occasionally for 5-10 minutes.
  • Intraoral gauze packs, with biting pressure at the surgical site, are usually necessary for several hours post-operatively, and occasionally thereafter for 24-48 hours for minor episodic bleeding. This is normal.
  • Please keep all follow up appointments. If you have any questions or concerns, during or after normal business hours, contact us at (772) 337-4798.
